Water Reclamation

The ECUA currently owns and operates three water reclamation facilities in Escambia County. These plants and their treatment capacities are as follows:

  • Central Water Reclamation Facility – 22.5 millions gallons per day
  • Bayou Marcus Water Reclamation Facility – 8.2 million gallons per day
  • Pensacola Beach Water Reclamation Facility – 2.4 million gallons per day

Currently in operation are 895.5 miles of gravity main pipes, 300.6 miles of force main, 17,041 manholes, 483 air release valves and 960 valves.

Central Water Reclamation Facility

The Central Water Reclamation Facility (CWRF) began operation in 2010. The $316-million, state-of-the-art facility is the largest public works project in the history of Escambia County. The plant sits on 2,200 acres of land on Old Chemstrand Road near Cantonment. It has been designated as an AWT (advanced wastewater treatment) facility, meaning it will produce effluent of a very high quality, which will be disinfected to the level required for unrestricted exposure to the public. One hundred percent of the reclaimed water from the plant will be reused, eliminating any potential surface water discharge. The CWRF is uniquely constructed to withstand Category Five hurricane force winds, and is more than 50 feet above sea level, removing it from any potential flood issues. The CWRF was funded in large part through grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other federal sources, the State of Florida, Escambia County and the City of Pensacola. Several local firms, employing hundreds of Northwest Florida employees, participated in the design and construction of the facility, three major lift stations and 25 miles of pipeline.

Bayou Marcus Reclamation Facility

The Bayou Marcus Water Reclamation Facility is located on Fayal Drive off of Blue Angel Parkway on the West side of Escambia County. This plant has the permitted capacity of 8.2 million gallons per day with discharge to over 1,000 acres of wetlands adjacent to the plant.

Pensacola Beach Water Reclamation Facility

The Pensacola Beach Water Reclamation Facility is located on Via de Luna Drive on Pensacola Beach. This plant has a permitted capacity of 2.4 million gallons per day. The ECUA, in partnership with the Santa Rosa Island Authority, has completed a project to reuse the treated effluent to irrigate portions of the medians on Via de Luna to minimize disposal to the Pensacola sound.
