ECUA RECEIVES NATIONAL SWANA AWARDS

The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) has earned the prestigious Gold Award in the Public Education category and the Bronze Award in the Collection Systems category in 2012 Excellence Awards program of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).  The awards will be presented at the annual WASTECON conference in Washington, D.C. on August 14, 2012.  The Gold Award honors the outstanding public education campaign that ECUA developed and utilized in the start-up and subsequent enhancements of its curbside recycling program.  The Bronze Award recognizes ECUA’s comprehensive automated collection program which serves 74,000 residential and 1,100 commercial customers in our community.

ECUA Executive Director, Stephen E. Sorrell, offered praise, “This recognition is a reflection of our employees’ professionalism, hard work and dedication, ensuring our customers receive the best possible service every day.”

SWANA’s Excellence Awards recognize the most outstanding solid waste programs and facilities in North America.  The Awards honor those programs and agencies that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management through their commitment to utilizing effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, advancing worker and community health and safety, and implementing successful public education programs.   

Programs also must demonstrate their fiscal and environmental responsibility through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. “The recipients of the SWANA Excellence Awards represent the best solid waste management practices in North America today,” said John H. Skinner, Ph.D., SWANA Executive Director and CEO.

For 50 years, SWANA has been the leading professional education and training association in the solid waste management field. SWANA’s mission is “to advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound management of municipal solid waste.”  SWANA serves over 8,000 members and thousands more industry professionals with technical conferences, certifications, publications and a large offering of technical training courses.
