ECUA is NOT performing any water testing in neighborhoods around the Ailanthus Drive Area...Click Here

Current Status: Alert Cancelled
Monday, May 22, 2017
05:00 pm CDT

The ECUA occasionally receives reports of a person or persons claiming to be ECUA employees in order to gain access to customers’ banking information or their homes to “inspect plumbing”.   These incidents can result in identity theft, unlawful trespassing, injury, and property theft.  An ECUA customer residing on Ailanthus Drive reported on May 22 that a man driving a red GMC truck was in that area advising residents that he would be conducting water testing tomorrow (May 23).  ECUA is not performing any testing of the water system in this or any other area.

According to ECUA Executive Director Stephen E. Sorrell, “If someone claiming to be an ECUA employee calls you or comes to your home or business, and they are not expected, do not allow them access without verifying proper identification.”

Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and / or your property in the event that you are in this situation:

• If you feel threatened in any way, or feel you are in danger, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
• ECUA employees rarely enter customers’ homes, and if need be, will only enter upon a request from the customer.  Usually, this is because ECUA is responding to a call initiated by the customer to our Customer Service Department.
• Most ECUA employees wear uniforms bearing the ECUA logo, and all ECUA employees have identification badges, which they will gladly present to you.
• Most ECUA employees drive vehicles that bear the utility’s logo.
• ECUA employees are NOT authorized to collect payments at any time.  Do not pay any persons claiming to be employees of the ECUA, saying that they have performed work on your property and need payment for this “service”.

Citizens should not hesitate to call the ECUA Customer Service line at 476-0480 to verify any claims made by persons asking for access into their home or business.  Please close the door and let them wait outside while you do this.   If it is after-hours, please call 476-5110. If someone calls you claiming to be an ECUA employee, ask for their name and position.  Hang up and call the ECUA Customer Service line to verify the claims they are making regarding your account.

The ECUA is committed to the safety of its customers and employees.

About ECUA: Originally founded as the Escambia County Utilities Authority in 1981, the Authority’s name was officially changed to the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority on June 29, 2004.
