ECUA to Begin Smoke Testing of Sewer Lines Wednesday...Click Here

Current Status: Alert Lifted
Tuesday, April 5, 2016
08:43 am CDT

ECUA crews will begin smoke testing of the wastewater sewer system lines in the Li Fair / Fairfield Drive area on Wednesday, to determine if there are areas where stormwater or groundwater is entering the sewer system.  An overload of stormwater into the sewer system can lead to sewer system overflows during periods of intense rain.

Testing will be conducted from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the following areas on Wednesday through Friday, April 8:

Li Fair Place; Belle Chase Way; Chanterrelle Drive

Carondelay Drive

Lillian Hwy., from Carondelay Drive to 79th Ave.

Fairfield Drive, from Lillian Hwy to W. Jackson St.

White smoke will be circulated into the sewer lines and manholes to locate broken pipes and other defects, and will exit from vent pipes on home roofs. The smoke is non-toxic, leaves no residue, and creates no fire hazard. The smoke will not enter the house unless there is defective plumbing present or the drain traps are dry. If potential problems are found on private property, residents will be notified of repairs that may need to be made.

Smoke testing is expected to continue through Friday, although the schedule may be modified as weather dictates. For more information or updates on the work's progress, residents may visit the ECUA Advisories page atwww.ecus.fl.gov/advisory, or call ECUA Customer Service at 476-0480.

Flushing of Water Lines: Burgess Rd/Davis Hwy...Click Here

Current Status: Alert Cancelled
Tuesday, March 1, 2016
08:51 am CST

The ECUA will be conducting unidirectional flushing of water mains in the Burgess/Davis area, near the ECUA well located at the intersection of Burgess Road and Davis Hwy.  Flushing will begin on March 2, and will continue daily over the span of approximately two months, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.   Residents and businesses located in the Burgess/Davis area may anticipate some fluctuations in water pressure, and temporary discoloration of the water is possible as a result of turbulence in the water mains created by the flushing.  These effects should be minimal, with absolutely no ill effects to customers' health and no long-term adverse impacts on the system.  As a precaution, customers may wish to store some water ahead of time for drinking and cooking purposes.   ECUA crews will remain in the area each day to flush lines, if necessary, to clear up affected areas.   If customers are still experiencing discoloration in their water two hours after flushing crews have left the area, they are asked to call 476-0480 for assistance.

For more information, customers may contact ECUA Customer Service at (850) 476-0480 for assistance.

Prevent Water Lines from Freezing...Click Here

Current Status: Alert Cancelled
Monday, November 23, 2015
09:50 am CST

Every winter, many homeowners and business owners face the inconvenience and expense that come with frozen water pipes.   With lowering temperatures last night and predicted for the next few nights, now is a good time to review ways to protect household pipes from freezing temperatures.  Following are a few simple measures ECUA customers can take to ready their home’s plumbing for this winter’s expected freezing temperatures.   External, exposed pipes are naturally the most vulnerable to freezing.  Homeowners may:

INSULATE PIPES OR FAUCETS IN UNHEATED AREAS:  Pipes located in unheated areas of your house, such as a garage or crawl space under the house or in the attic, are subject to freezing.  If you have time to do this before freezing temperatures arrive, wrap these pipes with insulation materials made especially for this purpose.  These materials can be found in most hardware stores or home improvement centers.

DISCONNECT AND DRAIN OUTDOOR HOSES:  Detach all hoses from faucets and allow them to drain.  This action guards against the water in the hose or pipe from freezing and bursting the faucet or pipe to which it is connected.

RUN A TRICKLE OF WATER:  When forecasts call for sustained and / or severe freezing temperatures, run a thin trickle of water from the faucet furthest from the water line coming to your house.  Usually this is in a room at the back of the house or outside, in the yard.  Allowing the water to circulate through your home’s plumbing helps to keep it from freezing.  Some consider this a waste of water but the cost of the water used is extremely slight compared to repairing broken pipes and the resulting water damage.

REMEMBER THE BACKFLOW PREVENTER:  Residents and business owners who have backflow preventers on their properties for water lines, fire lines, irrigation systems, and swimming pools need to protect their backflow preventers from freeze as well.  Extended freezes can burst the body of the backflow assembly, rendering it useless.  Wrap these pipes with insulation materials, made especially for this purpose.  These materials can be found in most hardware stores or home improvement centers.

If the device and the water line are not in use at this time (i.e., irrigation system or swimming pool lines), shut off the water supply line and drain the backflow device.
