Planned Water System Maintenance; Water Service Interruption to Semoran Drive & Area

ECUA crews will be on site for valve replacement work on the evening of Tuesday, January 30.   During this time, water service will be temporarily interrupted as crews work to replace old valves on the 3-inch and 6-inch water mains.   In order to minimize the inconvenience to our customers, this work will be performed at night.

Work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 30, from 9:00 p.m. to Wednesday, January 31 at 1:00 a.m.

  • Semoran Drive, between Bluffs Drive and Celtic Circle
  • Celtic Circle
  • Bavarian Court

A precautionary boil water notice for the project area will be issued after water service is restored and will continue for approximately 48 hours.  Precautionary boil water notices are issued as part of standard protocol after any loss of water pressure, whether as a result of unplanned water outages or planned utility work.  For convenience, customers may wish to store water ahead of time for drinking and cooking purposes.  Guidelines for precautionary boil water notices are available on the ECUA website at this link: http://www.ecua.fl.gov/water-quality/boil-water-notices-and-why-we-issue-them.

Residents and businesses located in the designated areas may anticipate some fluctuations in water pressure during the flushing activities.   Temporary discoloration of the water is common and possible as a result of the flushing/maintenance activities.  This is normal and may be corrected by running the cold water only at your faucet for ten to fifteen minutes.   These effects should be minimal, with absolutely no ill effects to customers' health and no long-term adverse impacts on the system.

For more information, customers may contact ECUA Customer Service at (850) 476-0480 for assistance.

ECUA ISSUES SUGGESTIONS TO PREVENT WATER LINES FROM FREEZING

ECUA ISSUES SUGGESTIONS TO PREVENT WATER LINES FROM FREEZING

Every winter, many homeowners and business owners face the inconvenience and expense that come with frozen water pipes.   With lowering temperatures predicted for the next few nights, now is a good time to review ways to protect household pipes from freezing temperatures.  Following are a few simple measures ECUA customers can take to ready their home’s plumbing for this winter’s expected freezing temperatures.   External, exposed pipes are naturally the most vulnerable to freezing.  Homeowners may:

  • Insulate pipes or faucets in unheated areas:  Pipes located in unheated areas of your house, such as a garage or crawl space under the house or in the attic, are subject to freezing.  If you have time to do this before freezing temperatures arrive, wrap these pipes with insulation materials made especially for this purpose.  These materials can be found at most hardware stores or home improvement centers.

  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses:  Detach all hoses from faucets and allow them to drain.  This action guards against the water in the hose or pipe from freezing and bursting the faucet or pipe to which it is connected.

  • Run a trickle of water:  When forecasts call for sustained and/or severe freezing temperatures, run a thin trickle of water from the faucet furthest from the water line coming to your house.  Usually, this is in a room at the back of the house or outside, in the yard.  Allowing the water to circulate through your home’s plumbing helps to keep it from freezing.  Some consider this a waste of water but the cost of the water used is extremely slight compared to repairing broken pipes and the resulting water damage.

  • Remember the backflow preventer:  Residents and business owners who have backflow preventers on their properties for water lines, fire lines, irrigation systems, and swimming pools need to protect their backflow preventers from freeze as well. Extended freezes can burst the body of the backflow assembly, rendering it useless.  Wrap these pipes with insulation materials, made especially for this purpose.  These materials can be found at most hardware stores or home improvement centers. If the device and the water line are not in use at this time (i.e., irrigation system or swimming pool lines), shut off the water supply line and drain the backflow device.

ECUA to Begin Smoke Testing of Sewer System...Click Here

Current Status: Alert Cancelled
Monday, November 27, 2017
01:41 pm CST

ECUA crews will be smoke testing of the wastewater sewer system lines in various neighborhoods to determine if there are areas where stormwater or groundwater are entering the sewer system.

Testing will be conducted in the following areas according to this schedule:

Tuesday, November 28 through Friday, December 1, from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. daily.

  • The Star Lake Drive area, including Star Lake Place and Lakeside Drive
  • Live Oak Avenue

Bayshore Drive to Windrose Circle

White smoke will be circulated into the sewer lines and manholes to locate broken pipes and other plumbing defects, and it will exit from vent pipes on home roofs. The smoke is non-toxic, leaves no residue, and creates no fire hazard. The smoke will not enter the house unless there is defective plumbing present or the drain traps are dry. If potential problems are found on private property, residents will be notified of repairs that may need to be made.

Smoke testing is expected to continue through late-March. The schedule may be modified as weather dictates. For more information, residents should call ECUA Customer Service at 476-0480.

ECUA Yard Waste Collection Volumes High Due to Hurricane Nate, Collections Delayed

Current Status: Alert Cancelled

ECUA Yard Waste Collection Volumes High Due to Hurricane Nate,
Collection Times Behind Usual Schedules

Due to continued increased volumes of yard debris following Hurricane Nate, ECUA yard waste collections in Escambia County may again run behind normal schedules throughout this week.  Routes last week ran behind and all were collected by the end of the day on Saturday.

With last weekend's pleasant weather, residents have continued post-storm clean-up and gardening, considerably adding to the yard debris placed curbside.  All routes/collections will be completed although some customers may have their yard waste collected later in the day than they normally do, or their yard waste may be collected on the following day.  All collections will be completed by the end of the day on Saturday, October 21.  Yard waste, as defined by the ECUA Sanitation Program, includes leaves, pine straw, grass clippings and small prunings.

To help ensure collections are completed as promptly as possible residents are asked to:

·         Please not use their garbage or recycling can for yard waste. Yard waste is collected separately from household garbage and recyclables so as to be composted.

·         Place bagged, bundled, or canned yard waste within two feet of the curb and away from the street/road.

·         Contain small yard waste, leaves, pine straw and grass clippings in standard garbage containers or bags (preferably compostable) that do not exceed 32 gallons in size or weigh more than 40 pounds when full. The ECUA will collect up to 20 yard trash bags or cans each week.

·         Cut limbs should not exceed six feet in length or 40 pounds in weight, and placed in two piles of no more than two 6’ W x 6’ D x 6’ H.

·         Ensure that yard waste is placed by the curb for collection by 5:30 a.m. on the normal collection day.

Customers are asked to call ECUA Customer Service at 476-0480 if their yard waste has not been collected by the end of the day following their regular collection day.
